The History of Boxer

The origins of strength machines

The desire to make leisure time more exciting and encourage healthy competition played an important role in the evolution of society. In the coin-operated machine industry, a key moment came in 1885, when the first strength tester, known as a weight-lifter, was patented in England. Players pulled its handles upwards to test their physical strength. This was the ancestor of today’s boxers, skill-testing machines that are now part of arcades, amusement parks, pubs and event spaces. Although American and Japanese companies dominated production for decades, the balance has changed. Few people know that almost 90% of global production now takes place in Poland, with Kalkomat, operating in Krakow since 1998, among the undisputed industry leaders.

The origins of strength machines

The rise of popularity

Strength machines experienced a dramatic rise in popularity at the turn of the 20th century. Different types soon appeared, testing grip, speed and agility. Boxers achieved the greatest and most lasting success, produced in two classic versions: with a pad mounted on the machine wall and with a suspended punching bag.

The first iconic models

The first models now considered iconic were made in Chicago, the entertainment capital of the time. Early machines were built mainly from wood and relied on simple, exceptionally durable mechanisms. Over time, sound signals such as traditional bells and lighting were added to heighten the excitement and sense of victory. In today’s age of advanced electronics, these elements, together with modern design and striking appearance, have become standard tools for attracting customers. Other strength machines, such as kickers and hammers, also developed alongside boxers and are still produced by us today.

Keeping pace with the times: Kalkomat innovations

The huge interest in strength machines required constant adaptation to the growing expectations of operators and players. Wooden structures and simple mechanisms gave way to durable composites, advanced electronics and unique design. At Kalkomat, we continuously modernise our boxers, introduce technological innovations, tailor designs to specific markets and test new solutions. Our goal is to create faultless, commercially efficient machines for venue owners that deliver pure satisfaction to players. Interestingly, alongside ultra-modern models, classic single-colour machines remain highly popular and are still part of our range.

The secret of popularity

What is the secret of their popularity? Competition is part of human nature. The natural desire to find out who is stronger, faster or better ensures that strength machines never go out of fashion. Research and the experience of venue owners also show that installing a boxer helps people release excess energy safely and can reduce aggression in entertainment venues. Above all, it is engaging fun that generates strong returns.

Kalkomat and Boxer

Our journey with serial production of boxing machines truly began in 2004 with models that paved the way for today’s Glove and Cube. The following years brought a stream of premieres: from kickers and hammers to children’s machines and specialist boxer models. The Comboboxer, introduced into serial production in 2014, became particularly popular as a combination of a boxer and kicker. In 2025, responding to a changing and rapidly digitalising market, we launched fully illuminated boxers: Glove Flash and Koboom. In 2026, the newest model, Boxer TV, entered the market, together with online tournaments on boxer.cup.com.
